GENE WATTS & JOEY SIMMONS TEAM UP TOGETHER TO RUN THE "1ST ANNUAL GARY BLEVINS MEMORIAL WEEKEND CLASSIC". THIS WILL SURELY BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST IF NOT THE BEST "MEMORIAL WEEKEND TOURNAMENT IN THE COUNTRY".
Even though the "3rd Coast Memorial Weekend Showdown" was considered by many to be one of the strongest tournaments competition wise of the select basketball season. The move to merge the "Memorial Weekend Event" with Joey Simmons of PBR Report was done to make the event stronger and better.
Joey Simmons and I have decided to name this event after Gary Blevins because of the strong influence that Gary had on both boys and girls basketball in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Gary was instrumental in the organization and growth of the Texas Shooting stars Basketball Club. The club known as "TSS" was the first organized girls and boys basketball club in the State of Texas. The TSS had over 400 teams in the club, which were all sanctioned AAU teams. Some well know clubs that originated from the TSS include Texas Express, Team Ichiban, Team Texas, Ft. Worth Frogs, Texas Thunder, Texas Freedom, Lady Panthers Elite, Lady Lakers, Lady Dynamites, Texas Ballers, Lady Tar Heels, Mansfield Magic, Texas Xena Warriors, Triple Threat, Texas Twisters, Texas Cyclones, Waco Stars, Big Red, Hot Shots, Killer Bees, Texas Tornadoes, Texas Airborne and Texas Liberty, just to name a few. The teams mentioned above won a total of twelve AAU National Championships and seven AAU National Runner-Up Championships. Up until 2004 when the Texas Shooting Stars was dissolved, this club was the largest and most successful club in the country. If not for Gary Blevins, boys and girls basketball in Texas would not be as big as it is today. This tournament is our way of saying thank you to Gary Blevins for his hard work and love for the game of basketball.
