Bowie, 35-5, was often overlooked in its
own district that included powerhouses DeSoto and Duncanville, but in
the end it was the Lady Volunteers standing tallest. This last win was
anything but easy.
Trailing by 13 points in the second quarter, game MVP Danielle
Nunn led the comeback charge and finished with 23 points, seven rebounds
and four steals.
Bowie turned its deficit into an eight point lead going into the
third quarter, but resilient Humble, 31-10, mounted its own charge and
went on a 10-0 run to open the final stanza. Humble’s Brittany Toran was
going for a game-winning drive, but Secrett Anderson came up with a huge
block. After Ashley Walker blocked a putback, the extra session was in
order.
A Pope shall lead them.
Behind dazzling freshman Brooklyn Pope, Fort Worth Dunbar captured
its first girls state basketball championship by knocking off Angleton,
56-50, in the Class 4A final.
Pope was painstakingly close to throwing down a dunk in the
tournament semifinal, but just missed. Her team, however, did not miss
when it came down to improving its record to 31-4 and cutting down the
championship nets.
Pope, 6-2, had plenty of help in fending off Angleton (29-10).
Jerin Smith tallied 18 points and four rebounds, while LaShandra Hill
notched 14 points, six assists and four steals. Pope, the game MVP, led
the charge with 18 points, four rebounds and five steals. She sealed the
victory by getting a putback with 54 seconds left after Angleton had cut
the deficit to four.
Ayana Brereton had 17 points and 10 boards in a double-double
effort for Angleton, while Tara Hurd did likewise with 13 points and 11
rebounds.
While Dunbar is new to the state winner’s circle, Canyon is not,
as evidenced by a 66-46 dismantling of Cleveland for their third
consecutive Class 3A state championship. Joe Lombard’s 32-3 team shot an
out-of-sight 90 percent from the field in the first half in storming to
a 42-21 halftime lead. The numbers read 17-of-19 from the floor and
included a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Game MVP Sierra Wilcox scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
Cleveland, 36-4, was paced by Shante’ Perry and NaQuita Williams, who
each scored 16.
In the most decisive of the championship games, Class 2A Brock
humbled Canadian, 64-30. For the winners, it was pretty much a
two-person show as Krystal Cole and Jordan Murphree tallied 53 of the
team’s 64 points. For Brock, 37-3, it was the third state title in four
years. Game MVP Cole scored 32 points, including a sizzling 12-of-14
from the floor, to go with nine rebounds. Murphree was not far behind
with 21 points, seven steals and five rebounds.
Canadian finished the season 34-3.
In the Class A Texas Cup, which matched champions of the Division
I and Division II teams, Seagraves edged Nazareth, 56-51. While the
Swiftettes were playing in their 21st state tournament, Seagraves was
playing in its first.
It was still Seagraves (30-9), though, which broke a tie going
into the fourth quarter to get the win. Twashae Peterson had 17 points
and 13 rebounds to lead the way, while Darchell Griffin added 15 points
and
