Since we are celebrating Martin Luther Kings Birthday.  I felt it fitting to have one of his many great sayings posted:

"Intelligence plus character - that is the true goal of education." - Martin Luther King Jr.

H.A. Doreman (Coaching The Mental Game)

Writes:  I, too, am a realist.  I'm aware of the pressure frequently put on high school and college coaches by administrators and parents.  The pressure to win.  I recall the words of my father:  "Don't ever be afraid to lose your job, kid.  Because you won't be very good at it if you are."  The imperative to win, at any cost to ethics and values and/or the fear of coaching a losing team, produces distorted and sullied people and institutions.

John Wooden

In November 2000 the ninety year old John Wooden was being honored and interviewed.  He offered one of his many strong views about coaching, particulary referring to what he believes to be a coach's major responsibility;  "He should remember he's there to teach."  Wooden said, "He should remember he's there to get a player to learn.....If he's recruiting just to have great players, he shouldn't be there.  He should be a teacher."

When asked if he believed most coaches today act out that role, Wooden smiled benighnly and said, "No."  Wooden, being realistic.
